Pride@SAP Canada Attends Out & Equal Workplace Summit 2017

SAP was a sponsor of the Out & Equal Workplace Summit 2017

It was a big week in Philadelphia, as 4,000 leaders of diversity, inclusion and equality in the workplace kicked off our annual Out & Equal Workplace Summit.

Global allies and leaders from Fortune 1000 companies come together each year to share strategies and best practices for creating workplaces inclusive of all sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions.

As Lead of Pride@SAP Canada, I was especially excited to attend my second Summit with 21 other SAP colleagues from around the world.

Global Leads of Pride@SAP

On top of learning from other organizations, we also connected with each other on what we’ve accomplished, shared our knowledge gained, and set our sights on continuing to drive innovation through diversity and inclusion at SAP.

As an organization 86,000 people strong, Pride@SAP is a global Employee Network Group and mobilizes its efforts by region, with mandates and goals that address a wide spectrum of D&I topics.

Pride@SAP Canada would not be where it is today without an impressive number of supportive employees, many of whom identify as “allies.”

“History teaches us that unity is strength, and cautions us to submerge and overcome our differences in the quest for common goals, to strive, with all our combined strength…” — Haile Selassie

The Power of Allies

“Ally:

noun, plural allies. a person, group, or nation that is associated with another or others for some common cause or purpose”

In the LGBT context, “ally” is a term used to describe someone who is supportive of LGBT people and can be non-LGBT, or identify as part of the community. (Human Rights Campaign)

My focus last week was largely around strategies and methods to rally allies at SAP Canada in order to further the notion that by supporting equality of those who are different, we are all ultimately more equal and free.

The quality of content and ideas being shared was impressive. Here’s a quick snapshot the ones I attended:

Groovy Goodness: Download Grab Dependencies in IntelliJ IDEA

ICYDK: In our Groovy scripts, we can use the @Grab annotation. With this annotation, we define dependencies for our script and they will be automatically downloaded and added to the classpath when we run our script. When we use IntelliJ IDEA we can use a nice intention that is part of the IntelliJ IDEA Groovy support to download the dependencies from our IDE editor. IDEA downloads the dependencies and adds it to the project module dependencies. This is useful because this will also add code completion for the classes in the dependency to our editor.

Let’s see this with a little example. We have the following Groovy script in our Groovy project in IntelliJ IDEA: https://goo.gl/ftiKVm #DataIntegration #ML

Live Blog: APIStrat 2017 Developer Experience Matters, Theme

Coming to you LIVE from APIStrat 2017 in Portland, Oregon where over 300 API enthusiasts, ranging from seasoned veterans to first-timer’s, have gathered to hear about emerging trends in the API Industry. This morning’s keynotes aligned around a common theme: APIs matter. Developer experience matters. For some of us, customer passion is often better stated as customer obsession. And it is critical that you build your API strategy around this obsession.

Yina Arenas, Principle Program Manager at Microsoft shared a behind the scenes story of how her and her team transformed Microsoft’s APIs. The grassroots, scrappy journey led to evolving the entire API Strategy across Microsoft, creating a unified Microsoft Graph API. Similar to Daenerys Targaryen is the Mother of Dragons, Yina Arenas is the Mother of Microsoft Graph. https://goo.gl/BEZjcC #DataIntegration #ML

Apache Kafka originated with LinkedIn and later became an open-sourced Apache platform in 2011. Kafka is a message queuing system and is written in Java and Scala, a distributed publish-subscribe messaging system that is designed to be fast, scalable, and durable.

2.0 Active MQ
